Frequently Asked Questions – Basement Flooding
Specific advice for dealing with water in your basement.
- My basement flooded—what now?
- A flooded basement presents several dangers. Before entering, make sure the power to the basement is turned off at the breaker box to avoid electrocution. If the water is deep, it's best to call professionals who have the proper equipment. If you pump the water out yourself, do it gradually over time. Removing water too quickly can create pressure differences between the saturated soil outside and the now-empty basement, potentially causing foundation walls to collapse. Once the water is out, all wet materials must be removed and the area thoroughly dried and dehumidified to prevent mold.
